Coral Conservation and Marine Education at Constance Le Chaland

Beneath the turquoise waters surrounding Constance Le Chaland, lies a vibrant marine ecosystem shaped by coral reefs, marine life and the delicate balance of nature. Through the Marine Biologist Experience, guests are invited to discover the wonders of the ocean while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting Mauritius’ precious marine environment.

 

Guided by marine experts, this immersive experience begins with an introduction to the unique ecosystems found around the resort. Guests learn about the vital role coral reefs play in supporting biodiversity, protecting coastlines and sustaining the health of our oceans. The educational session also highlights the challenges facing coral ecosystems and the conservation efforts dedicated to restoring them, before guests embark on a guided snorkelling experience to observe the underwater world first-hand.

 

The Marine Biologist Experience offers more than an exploration of marine life; it creates an opportunity to become part of a wider conservation journey. The coral restoration programme showcased during the experience is led by the Currimjee Foundation in partnership with Constance Le Chaland IKO Mauritius, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting Mauritius’ natural heritage.

The initiative began in 2018 with an ecological assessment of the La Cambuse lagoon, identifying opportunities to support coral reef restoration. Building on this research, a pilot restoration programme was launched in 2021 in collaboration with the University of Mauritius, demonstrating the potential of active coral restoration techniques.

Since then, the programme has continued to grow through meaningful partnerships with the British High Commission Mauritius, EcoMode Society and the MOL Mauritius International Fund. Today, the restoration project features 55 spider frames across approximately 500 m² of the La Cambuse lagoon. These structures support coral growth through fragmentation techniques while also encouraging the natural settlement of coral larvae, embracing more sustainable and nature-based restoration approaches.

 

Coral reefs are among the planet’s most diverse and valuable ecosystems. Beyond providing a home for countless marine species, healthy reefs contribute to coastal protection, support local fisheries and strengthen the resilience of island environments.

Through this initiative, Constance Le Chaland IKO Mauritius and the Currimjee Foundation demonstrate how responsible tourism can create meaningful connections between guests, communities and nature. By learning about coral conservation and experiencing the marine environment responsibly, guests are encouraged to become ambassadors for ocean protection.

The commitment extends beyond reef restoration. Through the Currimjee Foundation’s School Awareness Programme, more than 2,117 students across Mauritius have been introduced to the importance of marine conservation since 2024, helping inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
